Understanding online payout
What is this?
A breakdown of one delivery-app order from the price on the menu to the profit you keep.
How it works
The discount comes off the selling price first; any packaging charge is added to give the commissionable value. Commission and 18% GST on it come off that, then ads as a share of it. What's left is the payout; subtract your costs for profit. GST the customer pays on food isn't included, because the platform collects and pays it and you never receive it.
Why it matters
Many owners judge delivery by the payout. The payout isn't profit: the food, labour and packaging still have to be paid for. This view shows whether each order really makes money.
Worked example
₹333.76 selling price, 10% discount, 25% commission, 5% ads: discount ₹33.38, CV ₹300.38, commission ₹75.10, GST on commission ₹13.52, ads ₹15.02. Payout ₹196.75. Profit ₹196.75 − ₹130 = ₹66.75 (20%), matching the Menu Pricing example.
Common mistakes
- Treating the payout as profit.
- Mixing up your packaging cost with the packaging charge to the customer.
- Running the same discount at peak hours as at slow hours.
Ways to improve
- Use the Menu Pricing calculator to set prices that cover every deduction.
- Negotiate commission once your volume gives you leverage.
- Keep only the ad types that bring profitable orders.
Reference ranges are indicative, drawn from common industry practice. The right numbers for your outlet depend on format, city, cuisine and pricing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the commissionable value?
Selling price minus discount plus any packaging charge. The platform's commission is worked out on this amount.
Why isn't the customer's GST on food included?
The platform collects the GST on food from the customer and pays it to the government itself, so the restaurant never receives it. It doesn't affect your payout or profit.
Why is my profit different from my payout?
Payout is what the platform sends you. Profit is what's left after you also pay for the dish, labour and packaging.
